With quite a few of our regulars playing at the Scottish Senior Women’s Open in Stranraer, we had a smaller field playing in the Extra June Medal.

The golfcourse looked beautiful in conditions that were ideal for golf. There was hardly any wind at all and the scores were pretty good. Violet is on a mission to crack the 14th(you aren’t alone, Violet!)

Bev and Maxi headed out early in the morning with Maxi determined to use her recently learned putting grip, from a chance meeting with an American chap (called Joe)playing at Silverknowes! What a remarkable round she had, admitting to feeling much more confident in her game. Her tee shot at the 13th headed out left and a few seconds later appeared on the green rolling close to the pin and yes, she got the birdie! Maxi deservedly won the medal with a nett 66.

5 shots back were Tricia and Bev with nett 71. Runner up was Tricia on countback. Well done!

Well Storm Alex proved somewhat of a challenge, although much more of a battle of the elements for the afternoon groups. They had sunshine, amazingly gusty winds, pelting rain and even hail! There was also a clap of thunder which must have been a cause for concern!

The morning groups were luckier with the conditions, particularly the 9.30am group who all appeared at the top of the leaderboard! Congratulations to runner-up Sarah L who had a nett 72 and Anne who scored a stonking two under par 70. Well done! I’m sure you were using your mantra, Anne, ‘Swing easy when it’s breezy!’

There was some chat in the morning of birdies, particularly on the front 9! Some claimed to have lost balls in the gorse and my playing partner did mutter, ‘it’s never a good sign to have a par at the first hole!’ How right she was!

Carol persuaded her playing partners, Fiona and Coleen, to move their tee time to the afternoon! She brought wedding cake for them from her son’s wedding, as a thank you and as they were walking down the 11th, soaking with rain dripping off them, Fiona piped up, ‘the things we’ll do for a piece of cake!’

Hopefully our next competition will be in drier conditions!

With an easterly breeze in the morning, Comiston Ladies were donning more clothes than usual for the June Stableford. Some were wishing they hadn’t taken their winter gloves out of their golf bags! Almost half the membership had entered which was gratifying.
What with it being a bank holiday for the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee, we hadn’t seen the course so busy in ages. In amongst the morning entry, there were two groups of gents on a ‘Stag do’. The occasional loud ‘whoop’ could be heard across the course but it was all a bit of fun and the course had a bit of a buzz!

Tricia Parkhouse sank three twenty foot putts which must have been exciting to watch! Ruth announced half way through the round that she was so glad that she didn’t play golf for a living when her ball narrowly missed the hole.

Four of the girls went out later in the day and played in idyllic conditions. The common complaint in the morning and afternoon, though, was of lost balls and missed putts. Coleen reckoned Jaci had Mr Blobby as her partner this evening but what’s the bet next week will be a different story, Coleen!

Topping the leaderboard was Kelly with a fabulous 44 points, 6 shots clear of runner up, Eileen. Very well done!
